CalJulia Neighbors will join Cal students in our annual BP Spring Work Day. We’ll clean up trash and clean out storm drains in the California Julia Street cross (4 blocks), prune, weed and mulch the sidewalk strips. We may also do some planting in the strips.

Sacramento Street – 68 tree wells were planted this past fall – they need to be weeded, any dead plants need to be replaced, and cordon off each tree well so plants are not crushed; plant remaining 68 tree wells from Tyler to Alcatraz, design and plant the planter attached to Alba’s Glass, clean up and cut back of Spiral Gardens, work to be done at Sacramento Market – I am going to speak with Yassir about some ideas we have – produce display area ifo the store, reorganize interior of store and bring in products that serve all of the local community, and potential interior painting as it relates to restructure of the store, potential exterior painting (contingent on weather)

Installing stainless steel medallions at catch basins and inlets with the message “No Dumping, Drains to Bay” along Strawberry Creek (which generally runs mid-block between Allston and Addison), west down Addison where there is a large storm drain, and to other storm drain routes such as on Lincoln and Sacramento.

Help Friends of Five Creeks remove invasives that increase fire danger and destroy biodiversity in beautiful Tilden Regional Park. Take a short nature walk and visit the Environmental Education Center and Little Farm on the way to the project site.

We are cleaning up weeds, turning over the soil, and preparing for our biggest planting ever. Volunteers can expect to be helping with planting seeds on our grow benches, turning over the compost, spreading compost into beds. We currently have 8 avocado trees growing and will need to transplant those into larger containers. - GARDEN WORK

Halcyon Commons, a small park in South Berkeley, was designed and created by neighborhood volunteers under the leadership of Halcyon Neighborhood Association where there was once a 28-space parking lot. The help of Berkeley Project volunteers makes a huge difference in our care of the park. In our March work party, we'll weed in the park and at nearby landscaped features, then mulch to control future weeds, and if the weather cooperates we'll also send crews out to remove graffiti in the wider neighborhood.
