The Berkeley Project

Sites | Berkeley Project Month 2012

March 3rd

  • Sacramento Streets Tree Wells Volunteers will be planting tree wells along Sacramento Street as well as spending some time and energy on the post office building that is vacant and in need of some maintenance/clean up.
  • CalJulia Neighborhood Group In the morning, volunteers will clear the gutter and storm drains, while picking up trash. In the afternoon, volunteers will be planting trees and preparing sites, by clearing the weed and grass, mulching, and watering the general sidewalk strip.
  • Indian Rock Volunteers will be weeding and removing ivy at Indian Rock. There may be additional raking as well.
  • Berkeley Rose Garden Volunteers will be hand weeding the slope in front of the viewing deck. The Rose Garden is turning 75 this year, so this project will greatly benefit the September celebration.
  • Westbrae Commons/CHIA Volunteers will be working with CHIA on their habitat restoration project, which is planting native California plants, weeding, and pruning on the Ohlone Greenway between Peralta and Gilman Streets in North Berkeley.
  • Friends of Five Creeks Volunteers will use levers to wrench out invasive, fire-prone French broom to keep it from spreading in Tilden Regional Park. If weather has made the ground very muddy, volunteers will instead work in a shady stream canyon, removing cape ivy, a very invasive plant that engulfs everything.
  • Aquatic Park EGRET Volunteers will be spreading mulch along the upper edge of the 75-year-old masonry seating terrace so that invasive weeds can be kept away from the shoreline vegetation and make the loop trail smoother and safer for visitors.
  • Schoolhouse Creek Common Volunteers will be repairing andmaking the walkways safer by adding and compacting new gravel.

March 10

  • BUSD: Music Department Volunteers will be organizing the Music Library at the Visual and Performing Arts Office for Berkeley Unified School District. The tasks will involve entering bibliographic information for printed music on a spreadsheet that will be used to catalog the music into a library information system software program.
  • Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency (BOSS): Ursula Sherman Village Volunteers will be removing all items from offices, pantry and kitchen so that the area can undergo a 10 month renovation.
  • Thousand Oaks School Volunteers will be painting the new chicken coop as well as building a "chicken tractor", a portable chicken coop.
  • Planters Makeover Volunteers will be working on 4 large planters, where they will be taking out old plants and planting new ones. They will also be weeding and cleaning up the planters, along with replacing the plants that were stolen, adding some fencing, and putting in the signs the youth redid.

March 17

  • Oxford Strip Volunteers will weed and clean up the Oxford Strip.
  • Claremont Canyon Volunteers will help prune vegetation (French broom) along one trail and and help carry some light construction material to a site where stairs will be installed.
